We catch up with the team from
Nanyang Technological University who scored top
accolades at the Crowbar Awards 2010 for their
star entry, "Epiphany". Here is what Lim Chee
Harn, Han Xuemei, Wendy Cheng Wan Yan, Flora Man
Tsz Kwan, Low Jinyong have to say about their
win.
How does it feel to win
the Crowbar Awards 2010, and what does this mean
to all of you?
Winning the Crowbar Awards 2010,
especially the Best of Show, was really a
surprise to all of us. We were much more
reserved before the Awards nights and put down
our chances of winning because of the strong
competition from other entries. In addition, we
expected the Best of Show to go to the Best of
Advertising Category - who also won last year -
Thus it really came as a pleasant surprise for
us.
Being the first film to win the
Best of Show meant more to us. It affirmed the
quality of our film and we were glad that we
were able to touch the judges' hearts. We were
very moved by the responses of the audience that
night too, even though they have only seen the
trailer.
Where do you draw
inspiration from?
Prior to writing the scripts, we
have watched many films in order to draw
inspirations from them. Mexican Director
Alejandro González Iñárritu's series of 3 films
- 21grams, Amores Perros and Babel impacted us
the most. Our non-linear structure of
storytelling stem out from these 3 great films.
However, inspiration aside, the original story
idea was just a simple concept that Wendy
(producer) and Xuemei (director) used during one
of their Year 2 school projects.
How did you all get
interested in producing films?
Passion and personal experience.
Most of us are involved heavily in film and
drama productions both in and out of school.
Film productions are tough but the satisfaction
that is derived from it is beyond the joy from
winning any awards. A simple smile or moving
tears from the audience means more to us. I
guess these motivations are enough for us to
carry on making films. You could even say that
once we have begun making films, it's hard to
withdraw from it!
What advice would you
give to future budding creatives in the Crowbar
Awards?
We can only hope that a film
entry winning the Best of Show this year will
encourage more film and video entries in the
coming years. The rise of new media has created
another dimension to the advertising industry.
We need more talents in the video department and
I think Crowbar can be that place where new
talents can be discovered. We also encourage
future creatives to develop original story ideas
and put extra effort in crafting the way to tell
a good story - for us, thinking out of the box
is important, but sometimes it backfires and
becomes overly self-indulgent on our own ideas.
I would rather that we spend 7 months just to
get the basic story out with the pure intention
of touching the audience in the most impactful
manner.
What are the team's
plans for the future?
We hope we can continue to make
films that we like in the future. This sounds
simple yet we think it is not an easy feat.
Epiphany is a film that we're really proud of
because it's a collective effort of 4 young
people with a common vision in our minds, and
it's very seldom that you can experience that.
To continue and make something better than this
will be a real challenge and we're willing to
take this to the next level when the opportunity
arises.
