Crowbar Winners – Where Are They Now?

Alice is the winner of the Best of Show Marketing Communications in the Crowbar Awards 2003. She started her career at Foote Cone and Belding Singapore (now DraftFCB) under the guidance of Robert Gaxiola. She currently works at BBDO Singapore as a Junior Copywriter.

What inspired you to participate in the Crowbar Awards?
I always knew I wanted to work in an ad agency. So, after a stint internship at a design house, where all I had to do is making coffee and delivering mails, I wanted to get into an ad agency so bad. The internship turned out to be good though. It gave me time to work on my Crowbar entries.

How has winning the Crowbar Awards helped you in your career?
Winning the Crowbar Awards is a great way for Creative Directors to notice you. Since excellent school grades won't land you a job in an ad agency. Winning Crowbar awards and having a good portfolio will.

Do you think the Crowbar Awards is a good platform for creative students to break into the creative industry and would you recommend them to participate in the Crowbar Awards? If yes, what advice would you give them?
It is the only student award show in Singapore you should care about if you're serious about breaking into the creative industry. If you're not, however, you can always join other school competitions instead, such as designing logos for community clubs, public events, your own rock band … the list goes on and on.

Did the internship program at Fallon Minneapolis sharpen your creativity/skills?
It was more about the experience, really. You probably have only one chance to work with famous industry players, such as Bob Barrie and Dean Buckhorn, throughout your entire career. (Unless you're really lucky, that is.)

Where do you get inspiration for new ideas?
If you're bothered to read this far, you must be really hungry to win. Simple human truth is always a great source of ideas. And always keep your curiosity like that of a child's.
