My 4AsNews Special Edition - Singapore Media Awards 2009

Hear What the Jury Had to Say:

Achim Glogowski, Volkswagen Group Singapore
“I feel that there is more integration now, much more sophisticated use of new media especially in the Youth Marketing category that I was judging.”

Jacqueline Cheong, DHL Express (Singapore) on the Intel-Dell Swarm Campaign
“It was a campaign and a concept that was able to reach worldwide, it takes a lot for a campaign in itself, particularly a campaign from Singapore to have that worldwide reach.”

Bonnie Datta, Economic Development Board
“There is continuous improvement in the level of entries; in terms of the thinking, creative use of media, and the whole 360 execution of the campaign.”

James Tan, Levi Strauss Asia Pacific Division
“It is encouraging to know that in these difficult economic times, people are still spending and engaging with the digital media, particularly the social networking sites as well as believing in the word of mouth to market your product.”

Revive the Awards Night

17 awards were given out during the Singapore Media Awards 2009 gala dinner held on the 30th September at the Shangri-La Hotel, with OMD going home as the biggest winner of the evening. Organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Singapore (4As), the Singapore Media Awards recognise and celebrate the accomplishments of Singapore’s media talent, innovation and success.

Of the total of 176 entries received this year, 51 were shortlisted and 14 campaign awards were given out. OMD Singapore hauled home a record of 5 awards, clinching the two top awards – the Media Agency of the Year and Grand Prix.

Coming in a close second in the medal tally ranking is Mediacom. Mindshare Singapore and PHD Singapore are tied for the third spot.

Receiving this year’s Young Media Person of the Year Award is Lin Xueting from Mindshare Singapore. Peter Giakoumelos from Discovery Networks Asia Pacific took home the Media Sales Person of the Year. There is no Media Person of the Year awarded this year.

It appears that the economic circumstances may have put the media agencies on the mettle to produce the most innovative and effective solutions. “This year, there is a lot of utilisation of new media. I suppose with the economic downturn people are maximising the media to its best advantage,” said Mr Vincent Lim, Managing Director of Eu Yan Sang (Singapore).

Attesting to the quality of entries this year, Pat Lim, Chairman of SMA 2009 added, “It was no easy feat judging the entries this year. There were some very closely fought categories where the jury panel was divided on which entry to award the winner. However there could only be one winner, which took careful deliberation and re-evaluation of the merits of the tied entries against the judging criteria to arrive at the final decision.”
